Figaro Chain

Figaro ChainHow can I make a shiny, gold / copper "Finish chain Figaro look vintage or altered / stranded?

I repair a necklace chain and is of good size, but could not find a distressed finish, but brilliant. Can I soak it in vinegar or other solution, or something to rub on it, to give it a distressed look?

Liver of sulfur (sold in art and jewelry stores) is used to create a look for sterling silver or oxidized copper. Gold and copper do not react well. Antiques varnish would work for them.
